About Somalia

Located in the Horn of Africa, the Federal Republic of Somalia has been inhabited since the Paleolithic period, Mogadishu is the capital city of Somalia.  The country has a long coastline on the Indian Ocean, the longest in African mainland.  Somalia covers 627,337 square kilometers of land and 10,320 square kilometers of water,  with a total area of 637,657 square kilometers.

The people of Somalia are referred to as “Somali”. The currency of Somalia is the Somali Shilling (SOS).

Flag of Somalia

The flag of Somalia designed by Mohammed Awale Liban, was officially adopted on October 12, 1954. The blue field is the same shade used by the United Nations.

The five-pointed white “Star of Unity” is symbolic of the Somali race found in Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya and the former associated British and Italian colonies.

Horn of Africa

The Horn of Africa, is a peninsula in East Africa and is home to the countries of Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, and Somalia, whose cultures have been linked throughout their long history.

The name is derived from its shape being reminiscent to a rhinoceros horn.

Africa the second largest continent after Asia, covers 1/5 of the total land surface of Earth.
